Smurfit Kappa is Europe’s leading packaging company providing products and services globally. It is established in 350 locations worldwide with 45,000 employees operating in 33 Countries.
TechniFire Solutions have a longstanding relationship with Smurfit Kappa providing fire safety solutions for the Townsend Hook Paper Mill in Kent. As an industrial site accommodating a wide range of facilities, a vast array of services are required. Two facilities that illustrate the range of services provided by TFS are the CHP Plant and Engineer’s Workshop.
CHP Plant
A new Combined Heating and Power Plant was built on the Townsend Hook Paper mill site, a facility central to the running of the paper mill. TFS as the incumbent fire protection and safety specialists were required to provide the necessary fire protection cover for the new facility. The plant consists of turbines, a boiler house, plant control/switch rooms and water treatment containers.
TFS provided a complete solution for the CHP Plant implementing the installation of systems including a pre-action sprinkler System, gas suppression System, addressable fire alarm and detection system including; smoke detection system, Beam detection, Flame detection, Shutdown Interfaces, Gas Leak detection system, portable fire extinguishers, a Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus (VESDA) system and hose reels.
The systems were installed according to the proposed specifications and tested in accordance with all standards and regulations. O&M Manuals were issued as normal practise containing all relevant Commissioning certificates and installations were completed to Smurfit Kappa’s satisfaction.
Engineer’s Workshop
Compared to the CHP Plant the engineer’s workshop was a relatively modest undertaking requiring considerably less systems. Smurfit Kappa refurbished the workshop which is a two-storey building consisting of cellular offices and open work area to the ground floor with further office accommodation to the second floor.
With hot works to be carried out on the ground floor in the work spaces as well as mechanical, engineering and electrical works/projects an addressable fire alarm and detection system and a Trace Heat Wire System was proposed for the whole building.
Again, the systems were installed according to the proposed specifications and tested in accordance with all standards and regulations. O&M Manuals were issued as normal practise containing all relevant Commissioning certificates and installations were completed to Smurfit Kappa’s satisfaction.
TechniFire Solutions continues to work with Smurfit Kappa to maintain all fire alarm and detection systems at the Townsend Hook Paper Mill. TFS also undertakes all projects as required on an ongoing basis maintaining a safe facility for all who work and visit the facility in Kent.
